The Advocates for Tobacco and Vape Free Communities (ATVFC) initiative is critically important in minority communities for several reasons. Tobacco use disproportionately impacts these communities, contributing to a range of health disparities, including higher rates of tobacco-related diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses. ATVFC, led by Latino Connection, addresses these challenges by focusing on culturally relevant strategies and solutions that are specifically tailored to the needs of minority populations.
What Advocacy Means to Us
Legislative Advocacy
ATVFC meets with elected officials to help them understand how laws related to tobacco, vaping, secondhand smoke, sales and enforcement, and underage use impact their constituents. For example, current PUP (Possession, Use, and Purchase) laws punish underage people when, in many cases, the person needs support to quit, support, and health care access. Punishments such as fines and loss of driver’s licence are unlikely to deter underage tobacco use, and may exacerbate the problem and create other undue challenges for the individual.
Community Advocacy and Education
In addition to meeting with elected officials and legislating bodies to advance public health policies, we also work to elevate the ongoing need for tobacco and vaping prevention and control among business sectors, stakeholder groups, community organizations, healthcare, faith-based groups, schools, parents, and other entities that are connected with youth and populations most heavily affected by tobacco, nicotine, and other addictions.
Our work keeps this important topic at the forefront of key organizations, while also providing them with avenues to become engaged in this work in ways that align with their own resources and mission.
