Advocacy

The Advocates for Tobacco and Vape Free Communities (ATVFC) initiative is critically important in minority communities for several reasons. Tobacco use disproportionately impacts these communities, contributing to a range of health disparities, including higher rates of tobacco-related diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses. ATVFC, led by Latino Connection, addresses these challenges by focusing on culturally relevant strategies and solutions that are specifically tailored to the needs of minority populations.

What Advocacy Means to Us

Legislative Advocacy

ATVFC meets with elected officials to help them understand how laws related to tobacco, vaping, secondhand smoke, sales and enforcement, and underage use impact their constituents. For example, current PUP (Possession, Use, and Purchase) laws punish underage people when, in many cases, the person needs support to quit, support, and health care access. Punishments such as fines and loss of driver’s licence are unlikely to deter underage tobacco use, and may exacerbate the problem and create other undue challenges for the individual.

Community Advocacy and Education

In addition to meeting with elected officials and legislating bodies to advance public health policies, we also work to elevate the ongoing need for tobacco and vaping prevention and control among business sectors, stakeholder groups, community organizations, healthcare, faith-based groups, schools, parents, and other entities that are connected with youth and populations most heavily affected by tobacco, nicotine, and other addictions.

Our work keeps this important topic at the forefront of key organizations, while also providing them with avenues to become engaged in this work in ways that align with their own resources and mission.

Why Our Work is Essential for Minority Communities

Culturally Tailored Approach

ATVFC prioritizes the inclusion of Latino leaders and other influential figures from minority communities. This ensures that tobacco prevention efforts are culturally relevant, leveraging trusted community figures to engage individuals in the conversation. By incorporating leaders who understand the nuances of the community, ATVFC fosters greater trust and participation, leading to more effective outreach and engagement.

Enhanced Community Engagement

ATVFC creates a unified platform for minority leaders to collaborate across sectors — education, healthcare, mental health, and social services — ultimately leading to a more comprehensive and cohesive effort. This allows the initiative to tap into a broad network of resources and expertise, significantly enhancing its ability to identify, address, and respond to emerging issues within the community.

Addressing Health Disparities

Minority communities, including Latinos, often face greater barriers to healthcare access, including a lack of culturally competent care and language barriers. ATVFC works to break down these barriers, ensuring that tobacco prevention programs and cessation services are accessible, affordable, and culturally appropriate. This helps to reduce health disparities and improve overall public health outcomes in these populations.

Youth Engagement and Prevention

Tobacco and vaping use is a growing problem among youth in minority communities, exacerbated by targeted marketing from the tobacco industry. ATVFC focuses on youth tobacco prevention, engaging young people through community-based programs, education, and role models who can influence their choices. By tackling tobacco use early, ATVFC helps to prevent the next generation from falling victim to addiction, ensuring healthier futures for minority youth.
